A.R.Rahman was born in Chennai on January 6, 1967 as A. S. Dileep Kumar to R. K. Shekhar and Kareema (born Kashturi). Rahman enrolled at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, but he had to work to support his family, which led him to frequently miss classes and fail exams. He then attended MCN School for a year. He later joined Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, but dropped out to pursue music career. He later graduated with a degree in Western classical music from the Trinity College at Oxford University. In 1989, he converted to Islam along with other members of his family.
After composing music for several regional films, Rahman debuted in Bollywood with the film Rangeela. He is well-known for delivering umpteen number of musical hits for the films like Roja, Bombay, Iruvar, Minsara Kanavu, Dil Se.., Taal, Lagaan, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Swades, Rang De Basanti, Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, Raavanan, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, Rockstar, Enthiran, Kadal, Kochadaiiyaan and I. Among his Hollywood scores, Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Million Dollar Arm and The Hundred-Foot Journey received critical acclaim. Among his several awards, he has won six National Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, fifteen Filmfare Awards and seventeen Filmfare Awards South. He has been bestowed with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 2010 by the Government of India.

Rahman is married to Saira Banu since 1995 and the couple is blessed with three children- a son named A. R. Ameen & two daughters named Khatija Rahman, Rahima Rahman. Rahman also appeared as a judge on music reality show The Voice. Rahman composed Marvel Anthem, which was the promotional song for the film Avengers: Endgame (2019). Rahman is involved with a number of philanthropic activities and charitable causes. On 15 August 2018, Rahman featured as the host of Amazon Prime Video titled “Harmony”.
